Slot Addresses Salah Controversy: “Calm Doesn't Mean Weak,” Unsure of ‘Scapegoat’ Comment

Liverpool manager Arne Slot faced intense questioning at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Champions League tie against Inter Milan, specifically addressing the controversy surrounding Mohamed Salah and his decision not to substitute him on during the 3-3 draw with Leeds United.
Slot defended his changing tactics, explaining that the team was struggling to cope with opponents' strategies, particularly after showing defensive fragility against Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven. He had made changes, including using a diamond midfield against Leeds, where he chose to start Ekitike instead of Salah. Regarding Salah's comment about being "pushed out to take the blame," Slot stated it was difficult to understand what the player meant, and that neither he nor anyone else knew the context.
The manager firmly pushed back against suggestions that his authority was weakened, stating that while he is usually calm and polite, this "does not mean I am weak." He affirmed that the club had to respond when a player made such public comments. Slot confirmed he had communicated with Salah clearly twice in the days leading up to the Leeds match, though they did not always agree. He suggested that Salah's frustration might stem from more than just his absence from the starting lineup, but reiterated that if the player chose to express his feelings to the media, the club also had a right to respond.
