Ajax Eye Takehiro Tomiyasu as Defensive Reinforcement After Arsenal Exit

Takehiro Tomiyasu has emerged as a potential signing for Ajax just five months after parting ways with Arsenal. The 27-year-old defender saw almost no involvement in the first team last season, featuring for only six minutes, and has not appeared in competitive action for more than a year. Arsenal agreed to terminate his contract in July despite it originally running until 2026, following another knee operation that added to his long injury record.

Tomiyasu joined Arsenal from Bologna in 2021 for £17 million and made 79 appearances under Mikel Arteta, but recurring injuries prevented him from establishing consistent momentum. After undergoing a second knee operation in three years, he returned to Japan for recovery and is now preparing to relaunch his career as he aims to secure a place in next summer’s World Cup.

Reports from Dutch outlet *Voetbal International* indicate that Ajax are among several clubs monitoring the Japanese defender’s situation. With his experience in two of Europe’s top five leagues and multiple Champions League appearances, he is viewed as a valuable opportunity on the free-agent market.

Ajax are currently fourth in the Eredivisie and sitting at the bottom of their Champions League group, with their youthful defensive line needing more stability. The club sees Tomiyasu’s versatility across the backline as an asset, though it remains unclear whether he is ready to commit to a move to Amsterdam.

Japan and the Netherlands are set to meet in Group F at the 2026 World Cup, adding another layer of motivation for Tomiyasu to regain match fitness and secure regular minutes. A successful club move in the coming months could be key to ensuring his return to the international stage in time for the tournament.
