FIFA Introduces Mandatory Cooling Breaks as 2026 World Cup Faces Extreme Heat Risks

FIFA has confirmed that every match of the 2026 World Cup will include two mandatory hydration breaks lasting three minutes each. This measure is designed to counter severe heat conditions expected during the tournament, which will run from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. With summer temperatures in North America known for reaching intense levels, concerns have grown over the physical strain players may face during matches.
A recent report titled Pitches in Peril highlighted the extent of the issue, stating that ten of the sixteen selected venues fall under a category of extreme heat-stress risk. In response, FIFA will require referees to pause play at the 22nd minute of each half, regardless of the host city. Some stadiums will also operate with closed roofs and air-conditioning systems to further reduce exposure to excessive temperatures.
Beyond heat-related measures, FIFA has announced several unique features for the 2026 edition. The tournament will include three separate opening ceremonies, replacing the usual single event. This expanded approach is intended to reflect the tri-nation format and enhance visibility across different host cities.
The first ceremony will precede the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City on June 11. The second will take place in Toronto before Canada faces the yet-to-be-determined European playoff winner on June 12. A third will be held in Los Angeles ahead of the United States’ match against Paraguay later that day, creating a multi-location celebration.
FIFA also emphasized that the final match schedule was structured to reduce travel demands for teams and supporters. The design aims to increase rest days between fixtures and accommodate global audiences across various time zones, ensuring smoother logistics and broader accessibility throughout the competition.
