Inside Indonesia’s Captaincy Debate: Asnawi Mangkualam Reveals What Really Happened
The discussion surrounding the change of captaincy in the Indonesian national team resurfaced after public comments from a PSSI Executive Committee member suggested tension within the squad. Asnawi Mangkualam responded to those claims, aiming to clarify how the decision-making process actually unfolded during the World Cup qualification phase. His reaction came after suggestions that internal harmony was disrupted when the captain’s armband shifted to Jay Idzes.
According to Asnawi, the captaincy he wore in the match against China was assigned directly by coach Shin Tae-yong, who remained in charge of the team at that time. He emphasized that the rotation of leadership roles had been a normal practice throughout the qualification rounds, with several players taking turns depending on the match context. In earlier stages, the armband had also been temporarily held by figures such as Rizky Ridho, Jordi Amat, and Jay Idzes.
The issue grew after remarks made in a podcast implied that a change in captaincy reflected deeper friction among players. Asnawi questioned the accuracy of those claims and challenged the source of the information, pointing out that those commenting were not present within the squad environment. He also involved Shin Tae-yong’s interpreter to help confirm the true situation and prevent speculation from shaping public opinion.
Asnawi further explained that discussions about leadership roles had taken place long before the controversy surfaced. After a match against Australia, he and several senior teammates held internal talks about clarifying the hierarchy of team captains. The conclusion at the time was that he would remain the primary captain, while Jay Idzes would serve as vice-captain, a structure the coach fully endorsed.
In closing, Asnawi stated that he would have accepted any decision regarding the armband with sincerity, whether the role remained with him or was passed to someone else. His concern centered on correcting misleading narratives rather than disputing the competence of other players. He stressed that the situation was straightforward for anyone familiar with team dynamics, and the renewed debate emerged only because of inaccurate assumptions shared publicly.
