Persib Faces Two Major Sanction Threats Ahead of ACL 2 Knockout Stage

Persib Bandung is confronting the possibility of heavy sanctions following the appearance of flares inside Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium after their AFC Champions League 2 group match against Bangkok United. The incident, which occurred during a highly charged night in Bandung, has been officially recorded and now places the club under AFC scrutiny as they prepare for the Round of 16.
The club’s management acknowledged that the intense enthusiasm of supporters contributed to the situation, yet they also recognized the risks it created. Early discussions with AFC officials have revealed two potential disciplinary actions: a partial stadium closure that would cut capacity by half, or an even harsher penalty that would force Persib to play their next knockout match behind closed doors.
Persib considers the presence of supporters a vital component of their performance, especially heading into the elimination phase. The recent home matches have showcased a powerful atmosphere that the coaching staff believes has helped elevate the players’ energy and resilience on the field. The noise and unity of the crowd have been viewed as a significant competitive advantage.
In support of their appeal, the management highlighted the rising number of spectators at recent games. Attendance has steadily climbed from 19,000 to 25,000, and then surpassed 28,000 in the clash against Bangkok United. The club hopes that this growing momentum will persuade AFC to allow full capacity for the upcoming match, projecting potential attendance of more than 30,000 supporters.
Despite the optimism, Persib understands the serious implications if sanctions are enforced. A half-capacity stadium would drastically reduce the usual intensity, while an empty venue would bring emotional and financial setbacks. The club expressed hope that improved adherence to regulations will prevent similar issues in the future and allow the team to maintain the strong connection with its supporters.
