Indonesia Close to Appointing New National Team Coach as Decision Nears

The Indonesian Football Association is edging closer to naming a new head coach for the national team, with an official announcement expected in the near future. Senior officials have indicated that the long wait to fill the vacant position may soon come to an end, raising anticipation among fans and observers.
The head coach role has remained unoccupied since Patrick Kluivert’s departure, leaving the national setup in a period of transition. Kluivert was the most recent figure to lead the team, but his tenure ended abruptly after disappointing results in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Following that setback, PSSI moved quickly to reassess the direction of the national team. The separation from Kluivert in October marked the second coaching change within the same year, highlighting the urgency to find a more stable and effective leadership figure.
In the search process, PSSI has already conducted interviews with two coaching candidates. While the identities of these figures have not been disclosed, several prominent names have circulated in recent weeks, including experienced European coaches as well as well-known Asian tacticians with international pedigree.
One of the frequently mentioned figures, Shin Tae-yong, has publicly stated that no approach has been made regarding a potential return. Shin previously left the role in early 2025 before being replaced by Kluivert, adding further context to the complex coaching reshuffles that Indonesia’s national team has faced over the past year.
