Persija Challenges Refereeing Decision After Maxwell Souza Booked Despite Disallowed Goal

Persija Jakarta have formally raised concerns to the PSSI Referees Committee following a controversial decision involving forward Maxwell Souza. The issue centers on a yellow card that remained on record even though the goal linked to the incident was ultimately ruled out.
The incident occurred during Persija’s narrow 1–0 defeat to Semen Padang at GOR Haji Agus Salim Stadium. Maxwell Souza appeared to score a dramatic equalizer deep into second-half stoppage time, but the referee annulled the goal after a lengthy VAR review, leaving Persija empty-handed.
Before the decision was overturned, Maxwell had already celebrated by removing his shirt, an action that prompted the referee to issue a yellow card. The controversy arose because the caution was not withdrawn after the goal was disallowed, and it was later officially listed in the match report as a booking in the 90th minute plus stoppage time.
Persija’s management questioned the logic behind enforcing disciplinary action for a celebration tied to an invalid goal. From their perspective, the emotional reaction was directly connected to a moment that was eventually deemed not to count, making the punishment seem inconsistent with the final ruling.
The match itself was already filled with tension for Persija, who were forced to finish with nine players after two red cards at crucial moments. Against that backdrop, the unresolved yellow card decision added to the club’s frustration and fueled calls for clearer interpretation and application of refereeing rules in future matches.
