John Herdman, Patrick Kluivert, or Shin Tae-yong: Who Truly Shines as Indonesia’s National Team Coach?

John Herdman’s appointment as Indonesia’s national team coach adds another chapter to the country’s history of hiring experienced foreign managers, following the tenures of Patrick Kluivert and Shin Tae-yong. Each coach brought a distinct philosophy and track record, shaping the team in different ways. Herdman, in particular, arrives with a reputation for building competitive national teams over the long term.
Before taking charge of Indonesia, Herdman led 108 matches with nearly a 50 percent win rate, averaging 1.62 points per game. In comparison, Kluivert managed 88 matches at club and national level with a 46 percent win rate, while Shin Tae-yong had the longest career, overseeing 361 games with a 42 percent success rate. These differences highlight the varying experiences and match volumes each coach brought before joining the Garuda squad.
Internationally, Herdman is recognized for notable achievements with New Zealand and Canada, including World Cup participation, Olympic medals, and leading Canada to the 2022 World Cup after a 36-year absence. Shin Tae-yong’s accomplishments include winning the AFC Champions League, national youth championships, and guiding Indonesia to the Asian Cup Round of 16 and World Cup qualifying stages. Kluivert, meanwhile, had more limited coaching success, with his most notable title being the Beloften Eredivisie with FC Twente U-21.
During their respective stints with Indonesia, Kluivert managed eight matches with moderate results, while Shin Tae-yong oversaw 57 matches, achieving a balanced record of wins, draws, and losses. Herdman enters the role with the expectation of surpassing or at least matching Shin’s achievements, bringing both a high win rate and an established international reputation for team development.
Overall, Herdman is viewed as a coach focused on long-term national team building, Shin Tae-yong as a disciplined manager with tournament and youth development experience, and Kluivert as a former player still seeking coaching consistency. Herdman’s arrival raises expectations for Indonesia’s national team to reach new heights, combining strategic vision with a track record of international success.
