Sevilla in Turmoil: Almeyda Sacked as Relegation Fears Grow, Replacement Race Begins

Sevilla FC have officially parted ways with Matias Almeyda after a disappointing spell that lasted just 32 matches. Appointed last summer by sporting director Antonio Cordon, Almeyda’s tenure came to an abrupt end following a string of poor results that left the club struggling to find stability.
During his time in charge, Sevilla recorded 10 wins, seven draws, and 15 defeats. While the team managed to score 43 goals, their defensive frailties proved costly, conceding 52 times across competitions. Their La Liga defensive record stood out for all the wrong reasons, ranking among the worst in the division, while their attacking output failed to compensate for those weaknesses.
The club currently sits 15th in the table, hovering just three points above RCD Mallorca in the relegation zone with only nine games remaining. A 2-0 defeat to Valencia CF extended their poor run to just one win in eight matches. Complicating matters further, Almeyda had already been serving a touchline suspension, leaving assistant Javi Martinez to handle matchday duties in recent fixtures.
Attention has now turned to potential replacements, with Luis Garcia Plaza emerging as a leading candidate. Known for his ability to guide struggling sides to safety, his past experience with clubs like Levante, Alaves, and Mallorca makes him an appealing option as Sevilla aim to avoid relegation.
Other familiar names are also being considered, including Manolo Jimenez and Joaquin Caparros, both of whom have previous ties to the club. With the threat of relegation looming and uncertainty surrounding a potential takeover led by Sergio Ramos, Sevilla face a crucial period that could define their immediate future in Spanish football.
