Keisuke Honda Makes Stunning Comeback at 40 with Singapore’s FC Jurong

At an age when most footballers have long stepped away from the pitch, Keisuke Honda has made a surprising return to professional football. The former Japan international, who officially retired in 2024, has signed a new contract with Singapore-based club FC Jurong. His last registered club before retirement was Paro FC from Bhutan, making this comeback even more unexpected.
Honda, who will turn 40 in June, remains driven by personal ambitions and unfinished goals in the sport. Beyond chasing unique achievements such as setting records across multiple international leagues, his immediate focus is helping his new team secure the league title. Despite recognizing the presence of strong competitors, he appears confident in his ability to make an impact.
Over the course of his career, Honda has built a reputation as a true global footballer. He has represented 11 professional clubs, including high-profile teams like AC Milan and CSKA Moscow. His journey has taken him across six continents, playing in countries such as Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy, Mexico, and beyond, highlighting his adaptability and international appeal.
The club he now joins has its own unique background. FC Jurong was previously affiliated with Japanese side Albirex Niigata and has undergone a transformation as part of its integration into Singapore’s football system. The rebranding reflects a broader effort to establish a stronger local identity while maintaining its Japanese roots.
Statistically, Honda leaves behind an impressive legacy. Across 503 appearances for 12 clubs, he recorded 105 goals and 81 assists. On the international stage, he earned 98 caps for Japan, scoring 37 goals and providing 23 assists. He also represented his country in three FIFA World Cups, further cementing his status as one of Japan’s most influential football figures.
