Three Indonesian National Team Stars Reach Europe's Top Divisions With Their Clubs
Several Indonesian national team players achieved an important milestone this season after helping their clubs secure promotion to the highest divisions in European football. By Sunday (24/5), three different clubs featuring Indonesian internationals had officially earned places in their respective top-flight leagues for the 2026/2027 campaign. Although none of the teams finished as second-division champions, they successfully sealed promotion through strong league performances and difficult playoff runs.
The achievement is considered a positive development for the future of the Indonesia national football team. Competing at a higher level could provide valuable experience and help improve the technical and tactical abilities of these players. Regular exposure to stronger opponents and more demanding competitions is expected to benefit Indonesia's national squad in upcoming international tournaments.
Ipswich Town became one of the promoted teams after finishing second in the Championship standings with 84 points from 46 matches. Indonesian defender Elkan Baggott was part of the squad during the promotion campaign, although his involvement on the pitch remained limited throughout the season. Despite the lack of playing time, being part of a club returning to the Premier League still represents an important step in his professional career.
In Belgium, Lommel SK secured promotion after successfully navigating a difficult playoff route. The club, represented by Joey Pelupessy, defeated several strong opponents, including RFC Liege, Beerschot, and FCV Dender. Joey played a major role in midfield throughout the season and became one of the team's most consistent performers during their promotion journey.
Another Indonesian player who celebrated promotion was Nathan Tjoe-A-On with Willem II. After finishing third in the league table, the Dutch side had to earn promotion through the playoffs. Willem II managed to overcome RKC Waalwijk, Almere City, and FC Volendam in consecutive rounds. Nathan featured prominently during the playoff matches and established himself as a reliable option in the squad during the decisive stage of the season.
