Como Shock Serie A Giants to Secure Historic Champions League Spot
Como 1907 achieved one of the biggest surprises of the 2025/2026 Serie A season by securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in club history. Guided by Cesc Fàbregas, Como confirmed their place among Europe's elite after a convincing 4-1 away victory over Cremonese combined with AC Milan losing 2-1 to Cagliari.
The achievement became even more remarkable considering Como operated with only the 11th-highest wage budget in Serie A. While several traditional giants spent significantly more on player salaries, Como managed to build a competitive squad through efficient financial planning and smart recruitment strategies.
Although their wage structure remained relatively modest at around €47 million, Como were still among the league's biggest spenders in terms of transfer investment. The club reportedly spent nearly €127 million on new players, placing them behind only Juventus, Napoli, Atalanta, and Milan in overall transfer expenditure.
The strong backing of the Hartono family has played a key role in the club's rapid rise. The Indonesian owners provided financial stability and ambition, helping transform Como into one of the most exciting projects in Italian football while several established clubs struggled to meet expectations.
Como's success also highlighted a major shift in Serie A, with both Juventus and Milan missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time in decades. With momentum, smart management, and growing confidence, Como are now preparing for a historic first appearance on Europe's biggest club stage.
