Indonesia Drawn Into Tough Group With Australia and Malaysia in AFC U-20 Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers
The draw for the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers took place at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur on May 28, 2026. Indonesia U-20 was placed in Group H alongside Australia, Malaysia, and Laos, creating one of the more competitive groups in the qualification stage. Australia entered the draw as the top-seeded team in the group, while Indonesia came from the second pot based on previous tournament performances.
The group allocation was determined through the AFC's official seeding system, which considered results from the last three editions of the competition. Indonesia's achievements, including a quarter-final appearance in 2018 and participation in the 2023 group stage, helped secure a respectable ranking despite missing out on top-seed status. The draw immediately sparked attention because of the strong rivalry potential between Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as the challenge posed by Australia.
For the first time, the AFC introduced a new qualification structure that separates teams into qualification and development phases. A total of 32 nations entered the main qualification round and were divided into eight groups. Meanwhile, 12 lower-ranked countries were placed into a separate development phase designed to improve competitiveness among emerging football nations in Asia.
The updated system also increases the pressure on participating teams. Nations are now fighting not only for qualification to the final tournament but also to avoid finishing at the bottom of their groups. Teams ending in last place risk dropping into the development phase for the next edition, making every match in the qualifiers far more significant than before.
Several other groups also feature intense competition across Asia. South Korea will face Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, and Lebanon in Group A, while Uzbekistan shares Group B with Syria, India, and Bangladesh. Japan leads Group G alongside Yemen, Cambodia, and Kuwait, while strong Middle Eastern teams such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Jordan are also expected to be among the main contenders for qualification to the final tournament.
