PSM Makassar Hit by Double Blow as Yuran Fernandes Departs Amid FIFA Transfer Ban
PSM Makassar is facing a challenging period ahead of the new season following the departure of captain Yuran Fernandes. After four successful years with the club, the Cape Verdean defender officially left when his contract expired at the end of May 2026, bringing an end to a partnership that helped shape one of the team's most competitive eras.
Since arriving for the 2022/23 campaign, Yuran established himself as one of the most dependable defenders in Indonesian football. His strong defensive presence, ability to read the game, dominance in aerial battles, and composure under pressure made him a cornerstone of PSM's backline. Beyond his technical qualities, he also played a crucial leadership role on and off the pitch.
His departure creates a significant void within the squad. PSM is not only losing a consistent performer in defense but also a respected captain who helped organize the team during difficult moments. His experience and influence were especially valuable last season when the club managed to overcome challenges and stay clear of the relegation battle.
Under normal circumstances, recruiting a new foreign defender with similar attributes would be the most logical solution. However, PSM's current situation makes that option extremely difficult. The club is currently serving a FIFA transfer ban related to an unresolved salary dispute involving a former player.
The sanction, which came into effect in May 2026, prevents PSM from registering new players for up to three transfer windows unless the outstanding obligations are settled. As rival clubs strengthen their squads for the upcoming season, PSM must rely on its existing resources, leaving the search for a direct replacement for Yuran on hold and adding further uncertainty to the club's rebuilding plans.
