Manchester United Win Race for Ederson After Beating European Rivals
Manchester United has completed a deal to sign midfielder Ederson from Atalanta, bringing an end to one of the most closely watched transfer pursuits of the summer. The agreement is worth €40.5 million, with an additional €4.5 million available through performance-related bonuses.
The Brazilian midfielder had previously been close to joining Atletico Madrid after reaching personal terms with the Spanish club. However, Atletico was unable to satisfy Atalanta's financial demands, creating an opportunity that Manchester United quickly seized.
United moved decisively by matching the required conditions and offering a package that met Atalanta's expectations. After several weeks of negotiations, both clubs finalized the transfer, while Ederson agreed to a long-term contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2030, with an option for an extra year.
For Manchester United, the signing represents a significant addition to the midfield. Ederson has developed into one of Serie A's most reliable and energetic midfielders, earning recognition for his versatility, work rate, and ability to influence both defensive and attacking phases of the game.
The transfer also highlights Atalanta's continued success in the market. Having signed Ederson from Salernitana in 2022 for a considerably lower fee, the Italian club has once again generated a substantial profit. Despite earlier reports suggesting a much higher valuation, the remaining length of the player's contract contributed to a deal that ultimately benefited all parties involved.
