Lazio Secure Josip Sutalo on Loan as Ajax Defender Arrives in Serie A

Lazio have strengthened their defensive options by completing the signing of Croatian centre-back Josip Sutalo from Ajax. The 26-year-old defender joins the Italian club on a season-long loan, with Lazio holding an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign. His arrival is part of the club's efforts to build a more reliable and competitive defensive unit.

The deal reportedly includes a €3 million loan fee, while Lazio can secure Sutalo's permanent transfer for an additional €7.5 million. The structure gives the Serie A side the opportunity to assess the defender throughout the season before deciding whether to commit to a long-term deal. It also provides Sutalo with a fresh challenge after his time in the Netherlands.

Sutalo joined Ajax from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2023 for around €20.5 million and quickly established himself as an important defensive figure. He has made 76 Eredivisie appearances and 108 appearances across all competitions for the Dutch club. His performances earned further recognition after he was included in the Eredivisie Team of the Season for the 2024/2025 campaign.

The Croatian defender also brings considerable international experience to Lazio. He has earned 37 caps for Croatia, adding valuable experience at the highest level to his club career. His arrival follows Lazio's other summer additions, including Davide Frattesi, Danilho Doekhi and Alfonso Pedraza, as the club continues to reshape its squad.

Lazio will hope Sutalo can make an immediate impact as they prepare for a demanding season in Serie A and European competition. His defensive experience, physical presence and international pedigree could provide greater stability at the back. If he performs consistently throughout the campaign, the Italian side may ultimately decide to activate the purchase option and make his stay in Rome permanent.
