Aston Villa Turn to Leon Goretzka After Bayern Munich Exit
Leon Goretzka has emerged as a potential target for Aston Villa after leaving Bayern Munich as a free agent this summer. The Germany international became available after his contract with the Bundesliga giants expired and was not renewed, leaving the experienced midfielder without a new club despite his impressive career at the highest level.
Aston Villa are reportedly considering Goretzka as a replacement for Youri Tielemans, who has completed a move to Manchester United. The Europa League holders are also looking for additional midfield depth after Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury while representing Belgium at the 2026 World Cup. Goretzka's availability on a free transfer could make him an attractive option for Villa.
Despite being in the later stages of his career, Goretzka continues to offer significant experience and physical quality in midfield. During the 2025/2026 season, he made 48 appearances across all competitions for Bayern Munich, accumulating 2,349 minutes of playing time. He also contributed five goals and five assists, showing that he can still make an impact both defensively and going forward.
Goretzka's long spell with Bayern has given him extensive experience in domestic and European competition, which could prove valuable to an ambitious Aston Villa squad. His ability to operate in different midfield roles could also provide manager Unai Emery with greater tactical flexibility. A move to Villa would give Goretzka a fresh challenge while allowing the club to add an experienced figure to its midfield.
Villa had also explored a deal for Bayern midfielder Joao Palhinha, but their proposal for a season-long loan with an option to buy was rejected. Bayern wanted a permanent transfer instead, while Palhinha is now reportedly close to joining Benfica on a permanent deal. With that option fading, Goretzka could become an increasingly important target as Aston Villa look to reinforce their midfield before the new season.
