Crystal Palace and Juventus Could Explore Intriguing Mateta-David Swap
Crystal Palace and Juventus could be set for an interesting exchange involving their respective forwards, with Jonathan David emerging as a potential target for the Premier League club. The possibility of a swap deal involving Jean-Philippe Mateta has reportedly gained attention as both sides assess their attacking options during the final stages of the summer transfer window.
Palace are believed to have made contact regarding David, who joined Juventus last season but is reportedly not part of Luciano Spalletti's plans for the upcoming campaign. The Canadian striker scored eight goals in 44 appearances during his first season in Turin, but his uncertain position at the club could open the door for a move back to the Premier League.
Mateta's situation has also created an opportunity for negotiations. The French forward has reportedly rejected the possibility of extending his Crystal Palace contract beyond 2027, prompting the club to reduce his valuation from around €35 million to €25 million. That figure is similar to Juventus' reported valuation of David, making a direct exchange financially plausible.
Juventus are actively looking for another centre-forward after losing Dusan Vlahovic at the end of his contract and sending Lois Openda to Lyon on loan. Although Randal Kolo Muani remains in the squad after his permanent move from Paris Saint-Germain, the club are still looking for another striker. Juventus have also been linked with Alexander Sorloth of Atletico Madrid and Manchester United forward Josha Zirkzee, with Spalletti seemingly prioritising a traditional No.9.
A Mateta-David swap could therefore provide both clubs with a practical solution before the transfer window closes. Palace would gain a proven international striker with experience at the highest level, while Juventus would acquire a physically strong forward who could fit their preference for a more traditional centre-forward. Whether the two clubs can turn the idea into a concrete agreement remains to be seen, but the similar valuations could make negotiations easier.
