Hakan Calhanoglu's Contract Standoff Puts Galatasaray and Fenerbahce on Alert
Hakan Calhanoglu has entered the final year of his contract with Inter Milan, creating uncertainty over his future beyond the 2026-27 season. With no extension talks currently taking place, the Italian club could reportedly allow the experienced midfielder to leave as a free agent when his contract expires on June 30, 2027.
Calhanoglu has been an important figure at Inter since arriving from city rivals AC Milan on a free transfer. During his time with the Nerazzurri, he has played a major role in a successful period for the club, collecting two Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies and three Italian Super Cup victories. He has also been part of Inter teams that reached two Champions League finals.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, Calhanoglu remains a key part of Cristian Chivu's midfield plans. The Turkey captain is expected to continue operating at the base of the midfield three this season, even though he will turn 33 in February. His experience, technical quality and ability to control the tempo remain valuable assets for Inter.
Inter are not believed to be overly concerned about the situation because they already have considerable depth in midfield. Alongside Calhanoglu, the squad includes Nicolo Barella, Curtis Jones, Piotr Zielinski, Petar Sucic, Aleksander Stankovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Andy Diouf. This depth gives the club flexibility while allowing Calhanoglu to concentrate on performing during what could be his final season in Milan.
A potential free transfer next summer would immediately attract strong interest from Turkey. Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have both monitored Calhanoglu over the past two years and could be among the first clubs to make an approach if he becomes available without a transfer fee. For now, Calhanoglu is focused on finishing his Inter career strongly, but the lack of progress over a new contract has made his long-term future one of the major storylines to follow.
