Alessandro Romano Chooses Italy as Young Cagliari Star Eyes Azzurri Call-Up

Cagliari midfielder Alessandro Romano has officially switched his sporting nationality from Switzerland to Italy, making him eligible to represent the Italian senior national team. The decision comes ahead of the upcoming September and October international windows and could open the door for the 20-year-old to receive his first senior call-up from Roberto Mancini.

Born in Switzerland to Swiss-Italian parents, Romano has represented Switzerland from Under-16 through Under-20 level. However, his Italian heritage through his grandparents means he is also eligible to play for Italy. The midfielder has spent much of his development in Italy, having joined AS Roma at the age of 14 before eventually moving into senior football.

Romano joined Cagliari from Roma last summer on an initial loan deal that included an option and obligation to make the transfer permanent. He quickly made an impression at his new club, scoring on his Serie A debut under Fabio Pisacane. His early performances have helped raise his profile as one of the young midfielders attracting attention in Italian football.

Talks between Romano's representatives and the Italian Football Federation had reportedly been taking place for some time before the change was officially completed. FIFA subsequently confirmed the switch through its Change of Association system on September 9, clearing the way for the player to be selected by Italy at senior level.

According to reports from Italy, Romano could already be considered for a place in the Azzurri squad for the next international fixtures. A potential call-up would represent a significant step in his emerging career, while also giving Italy another promising midfield option for the future. His decision to commit to the national team could become an important milestone as he continues developing at Cagliari.
