Lukas Kwasniok Takes FC Köln to Court Over Salary Dispute
Lukas Kwasniok has taken legal action against FC Köln following a dispute over his salary after the club dismissed him in March 2026. The German coach is challenging the decision to reduce his annual wages by half despite having a contract that was originally set to run until the summer of 2028.
Kwasniok joined Köln in June 2025 under an agreement worth €1 million per year. However, his time at the club ended after the 2025/26 season following a disappointing run of results. Across 29 matches in charge, Köln averaged only one point per game, leading the club to decide that a change in the dugout was necessary.
The termination did not automatically bring an end to Köln’s financial obligations under the existing contract. Reports from several German football outlets indicated that Kwasniok was entitled to receive his agreed salary through June 2028. Köln, however, reportedly began paying only 50 percent of the amount stipulated in the original agreement, prompting the former coach to challenge the decision.
Both sides attempted to resolve the dispute through mediation in August 2026, but the process failed to produce an agreement. As a result, Kwasniok and Köln are scheduled to face each other in a closed court hearing in February 2027. The legal proceedings could still be avoided if the two parties reach a private settlement before the hearing takes place.
The dispute adds another complication to Kwasniok’s short spell at Köln, which ended far earlier than expected. While the club has moved on from his tenure, the financial disagreement could continue for months as both sides seek a resolution over the remaining value of his contract. For Kwasniok, the upcoming legal process represents an effort to secure what he believes he is owed under the terms of his original deal.
