Chelsea Manager Maresca Downplays Squad Issues Amid Fernandez Controversy
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is confident that there will be "no problems at all" when midfielder Enzo Fernandez joins the team for their US pre-season tour, despite ongoing disciplinary proceedings related to accusations of racism. Fernandez, 23, was accused by the French Football Federation of singing a "racist and discriminatory" chant following Argentina's Copa America win.

The chant in question allegedly contains lyrics that question the heritage of France's black and mixed-race players. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, who has one cap for France, highlighted the issue by posting the video on Instagram, labeling it as "uninhibited racism." FIFA has since launched an investigation.

Fernandez has issued an apology for the incident. Maresca stated, "It is quite easy in terms of the player doing a statement to apologise. The club did the same, so I don't think there is something to add in terms of the situation. It is already clear and clarified."

When asked about potential issues within the squad, which includes seven black or mixed-race French players, Maresca responded, "I don't think so. They are all human beings. I don't think there are any bad intentions from any of them. I don't think when Enzo is back that we will have any situations."

Chelsea captain Reece James also expressed readiness to address any arising issues, noting, "It's a difficult situation and Enzo has acknowledged he was wrong and quickly put his hand up to apologise to the club, team and people offended."

Chelsea's next pre-season match is against Wrexham in Santa Clara on Wednesday. Maresca's remarks aim to move the focus back to football as they prepare for the new season.
