Arteta Urged to Focus on Positivity Amid Transfer Talk

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has publicly criticized Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for his comments regarding the club's need for additional signings. Nicol advised Arteta to "shut up" about transfer requirements and instead adopt a more positive outlook on the squad's title prospects.

Arsenal's only confirmed signing so far is goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford. However, the club is expected to announce the acquisition of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori soon, and Arteta is reportedly keen on bringing in a striker and a central midfielder, with Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino being a potential target.
During Arsenal's pre-season tour in the United States, Arteta emphasized the need to improve various positions to compete effectively in the Premier League. He highlighted the importance of meeting higher standards to challenge Manchester City for the title, mentioning specific areas where the squad is lacking.
Nicol, however, believes that Arteta's focus on transfer needs sends the wrong message. Speaking on ESPN FC, Nicol expressed his frustration, urging Arteta to project confidence in the team's current capabilities instead of highlighting gaps. He argued that such comments could be perceived as making excuses before the season even begins.
Arsenal is set to kick off their Premier League campaign against Wolves on August 17, and Nicol insists that Arteta should be instilling belief in his players and fans rather than dwelling on the need for more signings.
