PSS Sleman’s Relegation Could Have Been Avoided Without Early-Season Sanction
PSS Sleman concluded their 2024-25 Liga 1 campaign with a convincing away victory against Madura United, securing a 3–0 win through goals by Betinho, Gustavo Tocantins, and Marcelo Cirino. Despite the strong finish, the result was not enough to keep the team from relegation, as they ended the season in 16th place on the league table.

The club accumulated a total of 34 points across 38 matches, placing them among the three teams relegated alongside Barito Putera and PSIS Semarang. Although their performance in the final match demonstrated resilience, the overall season’s outcome sealed their fate in the bottom three.

A significant factor contributing to their relegation was a disciplinary sanction issued by the PSSI’s disciplinary committee at the beginning of the season. PSS Sleman was penalized three points and fined Rp150 million due to a match-fixing case dating back to the 2018 Liga 2 season. This left them starting the current season with a negative points balance.

Without the point deduction, PSS Sleman would have finished the season with 37 points, surpassing the safety threshold. This would have placed them in 13th position, ahead of Madura United, who narrowly avoided relegation. The early-season punishment ultimately proved decisive in the club's drop to a lower division.
