Mail: Tuchel Recalls Foden to Assess Role in New England System
According to the Daily Mail, England manager Thomas Tuchel has recalled the in-form Phil Foden to the national squad to assess his performance within the team's new tactical setup. The report suggests that, more than for any other player, this training camp feels like a World Cup selection audition for the 25-year-old.

Tuchel first took issue with Foden back in March, observing that the player's good mood and performance seemed confined to the dartboard game he was playing with Morgan Rogers, not when he switched to football boots. The manager had concerns, leading to Foden's omission until now. He was only recalled after regaining his form at Manchester City, specifically following his impressive two goals against Dortmund last week.

Tuchel has made it clear that Foden’s position is not out wide; rather, he views Foden as a No. 10 or a False Nine in Harry Kane’s absence. To secure a place in the England starting XI, Foden must outperform Rogers and Jude Bellingham. To simply stay in the squad, he must surpass Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White, and the soon-to-return Cole Palmer.

Tuchel is determined not to repeat the mistakes of previous managers like Southgate. He plans to select his best XI based on his system, meaning only one of Foden or Bellingham (assuming Kane is available) will feature, if at all, to avoid another "Gerrard and Lampard" situation where two leaders share the stage without a common script.

Tuchel's main concern is Foden's perceived lack of "childlike joy" when playing for the national team, which is often evident at his club. This week’s camp is a social and practical experiment aimed at determining whether this issue stems from team dynamics, environment, or positional clarity. The coach believes playing him centrally will provide that clarity.
For both coach and player, the goal is clear: to find the target—this time in the opposition's penalty box, not the games room.
