Sergio Ramos is aiming for a place in Spain’s squad for the 2026 World Cup while preparing to move on from Monterrey. The veteran defender rejected the club’s offer of a contract extension and will part ways with the Mexican side once the Liguilla ends. His decision signals that he has no plans to retire and is instead searching for a new challenge.
Ramos considers his chapter with Rayados complete, despite having adapted well to the city and its supporters. His camp has confirmed that he wants to explore a different path in his career, even though he formed a strong connection with the club. Approaching his 40th birthday, he hopes to continue playing in a league he has not yet experienced and ideally somewhere closer to Spain.
His representatives have begun exploring options for 2026, with MLS, Saudi Arabia, and several European teams identified as realistic destinations. Ramos previously received a lucrative offer from the Middle East before choosing Monterrey, and similar proposals could emerge again. A return to Europe, however, is viewed as the most strategic move as he seeks to stay visible to Spain’s national team.
Despite being well past his peak, Ramos believes he still offers the leadership and defensive qualities needed at the highest level. Earning a World Cup call-up remains his primary motivation, and he is determined to prove he can contribute to Spain’s campaign in North America next year.
