Czech Republic Head Coach Miroslav Koubek Steps Down After World Cup Exit

Miroslav Koubek has resigned as head coach of the Czech Republic following the team's disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision came after the national side finished bottom of Group A with just one point, ending its campaign at the group stage.

The Czech Republic concluded the tournament with a heavy 3-0 defeat to hosts Mexico after previously managing only a draw against South Africa. The results left the team well short of securing a place in the knockout rounds and sparked widespread disappointment.

Koubek also cited off-field issues as an important factor behind his departure. He felt that persistent media criticism and what he believed to be misleading public narratives created an environment that made it increasingly difficult for him to continue leading the national team.

On the pitch, the veteran coach admitted that the Czech Republic made too many mistakes throughout the competition. He also believed that the demanding travel schedule during the tournament contributed to player fatigue, particularly before the decisive match against Mexico.

Despite the unsuccessful World Cup campaign, Koubek leaves behind an important achievement by guiding the Czech Republic back to the tournament for the first time since 2006 through the playoff route. However, tactical decisions during the finals, including leaving star striker Patrik Schick out of the starting lineup against Mexico, drew significant criticism and ultimately marked the end of his tenure.
