Serie A Expands VAR Powers for 2026/27 Season
Serie A will introduce major changes to its Video Assistant Referee system for the 2026/27 campaign, giving officials more authority to correct important decisions during matches. The new measures are designed to improve accuracy and reduce controversial calls.
One of the biggest updates allows VAR to review and overturn incorrect corner-kick decisions when doing so does not interfere with the flow of the game. The change follows several disputed incidents from last season that highlighted the need for additional oversight.
Another significant rule change gives VAR the ability to review second yellow cards that lead to a player's dismissal. This adjustment follows updated guidance from the International Football Association Board and is expected to be implemented across competitions.
Italian refereeing will also adopt an approach that more closely reflects UEFA standards. Certain forms of player behavior that previously carried the risk of a red card will now be treated more leniently, with yellow cards considered sufficient in many situations.
While Serie A is ready to implement the expanded VAR system, Italy's lower divisions are still evaluating whether they can follow suit because of technical limitations. League officials hope the new regulations will make matches fairer and improve confidence in officiating throughout the season.
