AC Milan Set to Renew Matthieu Udol Pursuit in January

AC Milan could return to the transfer market in January with renewed interest in RC Lens defender Matthieu Udol after failing to secure his signature during the summer window. The Rossoneri were among several clubs keen on the left-footed defender, but Lens remained firm in their stance and refused to consider a transfer.
Milan were not alone in pursuing Udol, with Premier League sides Aston Villa and Sunderland also making approaches for the player. However, Lens had no intention of allowing the defender to leave and ultimately retained him for their Ligue 1 and Champions League campaigns. Udol’s performances have also placed him on the radar of the French national team, adding further value to his growing reputation.
Milan eventually strengthened their squad by signing Diego Moreira during the summer, although the Belgian was deployed on the right side in the meeting with Juventus despite his preference for operating on the left. Meanwhile, Davide Bartesaghi could increasingly be used as a left-sided centre-back alongside Strahinja Pavlovic, potentially reducing the need for an immediate defensive reshuffle.
Despite missing out on Udol, Milan’s interest has reportedly not disappeared. The club are expected to explore another opportunity in January, with a loan deal potentially offering a more realistic route to bringing the defender to San Siro. The proposed agreement could also include an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the loan spell.
Udol’s versatility, defensive ability and experience with Lens make him an appealing target for Milan as they continue to assess their options on the left side of the defence. If Lens become more open to negotiations during the winter window, the Rossoneri could once again make a serious attempt to complete a deal that proved impossible to achieve during the summer.
