Persebaya Eyes Shin Tae-yong and Teco as Potential New Head Coach After Munster’s Exit

Persebaya Surabaya has officially parted ways with head coach Paul Munster following the conclusion of the 2024-25 Liga 1 season. The club expressed gratitude for his contributions since his arrival in January 2024, acknowledging both the memorable moments and the lessons learned during his tenure. Munster’s departure opens the door for new leadership as Persebaya prepares for domestic and regional challenges.
The club has not yet revealed the identity of Munster’s replacement but hinted that the incoming head coach will arrive alongside a full coaching staff. This strategic approach reflects Persebaya’s ambition to elevate performance in Liga 1 as well as the upcoming ASEAN club competitions. The management is focused on a comprehensive transition, aiming to build a cohesive team under new leadership.
Two prominent names have emerged as potential candidates. The first is Shin Tae-yong, whose association with Persebaya was rumored earlier in the year. Although the club’s management has remained discreet about any negotiations, they confirmed that discussions with multiple coaches are ongoing as they seek a figure who aligns with their vision for the next season.
Another strong candidate is Stefano Cugurra, known as Teco, who recently parted ways with Bali United. Speculation suggests that he could make a return to Persebaya, where he once served as a physical trainer in the early 2000s and helped the team clinch a championship. Teco's prior connection to the club and experience in Indonesian football make him a compelling option for the head coach position.
